Starting to workout is always the hardest part of the entire fitness journey. But it is also one of the best choices you can make for your health. Once you’ve started, it’s important that you avoid common workout mistakes, so you don’t impede the health benefits of exercise as well as any risk of injury.

Too Much Too Soon

In the beginning, we’ve all been guilty of either over-estimating our abilities or overcompensating for our lack of abilities for fear of what others thought of us. But this behaviour only exercises your ego, not your muscles. If you keep on training your muscles until they fail, you are exposed to the risk of heavy injuries. It is always wiser to lift a weight that suits your capacity, and not something that will injure your tissues or muscles. So, make sure you are confident about what you do and are not influenced about what others think or say. Having a trainer with you might help guide you in the beginning when everything seems a little tougher.


Not listening to your body

Whilst some soreness and discomfort will accompany any new training plan, actual pain should not. If you back off as soon as you begin to experience genuine pain, you often won’t require too much downtime before being able to get back to training again. However, if you ignore your body’s warnings, you’re more likely to cause yourself an injury.  This can ultimately derail you from your fitness goals, so always listen to your body!

Poor form

If your body is not in the proper positioning whilst training, stress and torque will be placed on joints in a way in which the body was not designed. For example, with strength training, improper technique when using certain machines and weights can cause all kinds of problems, which can lead to serious issues. Again, always listen to your body - if a movement of exercise feels wrong, you should seek help from a trainer or coach for guidance on the proper approach.


Bad equipment

While a piece of equipment won’t generally solve all of your injury issues, it can definitely help to prevent them. For example, the type of footwear you use is vital to keeping you up and moving without damaging your feet or ankles. This means finding the correct equipment that suits you best, depending on the biomechanics and types of workouts you choose to do. It’s important to remember that you should choose equipment and clothing that makes you feel the most comfortable when working out, rather than what is the most popular.
