If you're not familiar with the concept of a "ketogenic" diet, it's main goal is to change your body's natural process of burning carbohydrates for energy into burning fats for energy. The 3 main components of this diet are High-fat, protein, and low carbs.
Lets get into a little more detail on how a ketogenic diet is different than your typical Paleo diet.
1. Protein
A Ketogenic diet involves much less protein than that of a paleo diet. The main focus is moderate protein and high fat. Paleo diets have a high focus on protein, and here is why you should avoid it.
- Digesting protein is a difficult task for your body, depending on the source some forms of protein are easier to digest than others.
- High protein meals can elevate your blood sugar
In order to adapt to a ketogenic diet, you are going to be eating way less protein than you're used to.
If you want to know how much protein per day, it's easy to calculate. (1 gram of protein per kilogram of lean body mass) You can use any basic unit converter to determine your weight from lbs to kg.
2. Carbs
The Paleo Diet is often referred to as the caveman diet. The idea is that if the food wasn't around for a caveman to eat, then you shouldn't eat it either.
Because of this, many paleo recipes can be loaded with carbs. Meals often call for potatoes, and many of the desserts contain a lot of sugars in the for of honey, syrup, or coconut sugar.
Now I'm not saying this type of carbohydrate intake is bad for your health, especially if you exercise, but it will prevent you from reaching ketosis. This is the point at which your body begins burning fat for energy.
It only takes a few weeks of following a ketogenic diet for your body to adjust to this new process. Energy will be produced not only from the food you eat, but all your stored body fat that is otherwise hard to get rid of.
3. Benefits
The greatest part about this diet is that it has proven benefits, and has be shown to aid in:
- Stabilizing blood sugar levels
- Helping to control epilepsy in both children and adults
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Stimulate cellular health
